The fishing has been okay on the Yellowstone but we are expecting it to pick up with the upcoming spring like weather. High temperatures are expected to hit near 50 by Saturday. Midges have been hatching daily and fish have been looking for them when they are not blown off the water. Stonefly nymphs, perdigons and other attractor nymphs will be some of the best flies to use to catch fish on the Stone. Lightning bugs or Prince nymphs are a few go-to patterns in the winter. They can keep an angler busy with whitey's when the trout are not on them. If everything else seems to falls short a San Juan worm is a pretty safe bet all winter. If you feel the need to fish streamers, something small low and slow will be the ticket. Streamer fishing has been pretty good with both small natural colored streamers and flashy flies. The wind is always a factor on the Stone so be sure to check the forecast before heading out.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
