Yellowstone River Fishing Reports

*Flow Data: Yellowstone River near Livingston, MT

The Stone has increased in flow very significantly the last few days making the river pretty dirty. Fishing has since become quite tough. The cold weather this week should allow the river to clear by the weekend. Fishing should be good once again after the mud passes. Midges and BWO's are now hatching in good numbers and rising fish are willing to eat them. Many times the rising fish are whitefish. A high riding parachute BWO has been working great so far. As the hatch progresses more technical flies may be required. Skwalas can be spotted here and there. If you toss a Crowd Surfer Skwala in juicy water you just might get a strike. Always worth a shot. Stonefly nymphs, perdigons and other attractor nymphs will be some of the best flies to use to catch fish on the Stone. A dead drifted sculpin can trick a few fish here and there as well. Lightning bugs or Prince nymphs are a few go-to patterns in the early spring. They can keep an angler busy with whitey's when the trout are not on them. If everything else seems to falls short a San Juan worm is a pretty safe bet all the way into runoff. If you feel the need to fish streamers, something small low and slow will be the ticket. Streamer fishing has been pretty good with both small natural colored streamers and flashy flies. The wind is always a factor on the Stone so be sure to check the forecast before heading out.
