Yellowstone River Report 7/26/2022

Date: 07/26/2022

Current Conditions

The Yellowstone has finally started fishing again. Still a lot of whitefish getting tricked into eating nymphs but nice trout as well, large ones at that. Still don't expect fantastic dry fly action but the fish should be eating nymphs and streamers at a decent clip. Rubberlegs, lightning bugs, perdigons, dead-drifted streamers, and prince nymphs are always a pretty safe bet and will certainly keep you busy with whitefish. Streamer fishing can be pretty productive but is day to day. Chubbies, Stimulators, Dry Humpers and similar attractor dry flies can work pretty darn well. Hoppers will be around the river in the very near future so it would not hurt running a hopper dropper if you don't want to look at indicators.

The Yellowstone is CLOSED between Mayor's landing and Sheep Mountain Fishing Access Site.

The Yellowstone River is the quintessential large western river and provides a unique Montana fly fishing opportunity with over 100 miles of quality, wild trout water. In fact, the Yellowstone River is the longest free-flowing river in the lower 48. There is every type of water to be found through its course, including the whitewater sections of Yankee Jim Canyon, the placid glides of Paradise Valley, and the long riffles of the lower sections near Big Timber.
