The Upper Madison is on the drop. Hebgen dam is pumping out less water everyday. Currently the flows from the dam are at 1,920cfs but they are incrementally dropping the flows. The fishing will undoubtably improve as flows decrease and the river becomes easier to manage on foot and boat. The feeder creeks like Cabin and Beaver are pumping in less dirty water and the upper stretch will clear up considerably but will not run clear in the foreseeable future. The West Fork is still dumping in about 1,000cfs and plenty of color. Focus your fishing attention on the sections above the west fork. Fishing can still be good in the dirty water. Throw on zirdles, rubberlegs, and worms for desired results. Streamers will also work as well. Black and sparkly streamers will be a good bet. Dry fly action will be intermittent but keep an eye out for rising fish. Salmonflies are only a week away, give or take. The warmer weather will trigger their emergence. Gear up for the hatch and browse our great selection of salmonfly patterns.

The upper Madison River is perhaps the most famous and highly regarded wild trout stream in the Western US. The river is formed in Yellowstone National Park at the confluence of the Gibbon and Firehole rivers, just outside of West Yellowstone, Montana. As the upper Madison River leaves Yellowstone National Park, it flows into Hebgen Lake and then works its way north through the Hebgen Dam and then Quake Lake. The stretch of river between Quake Lake and Ennis, Montana is known as the “50 Mile Riffle” and is typically the portion of the Madison River that people refer to as the "Upper Madison."
