Upper Madison Fishing Report 5/26/2023

Date: 05/26/2023

Current Conditions

As of this morning there is a pretty solid spike out of the Hebgen damn so expect to see some dirty water on the upper. Nymphing or streamer fishing will be most productive. I would use a rubber leg or worm down to some good attractor nymphs like Lighting Bugs, Perdigons, Prince Nymphs, and Zebra Midges. as far as streamer fishing it will depend on the weather that day. Dark day I would use a dark fly like and olive or natural mini Dungeon on a sunny day I would use Sparkle Minnows or Sparkle Yummy's as well as lighter colored Mini Dungeons like yellow and cream. You may see some bugs out but chances are they wont be rising to them in the dirty water. If you do stumble upon some risers they are likely rising to some BWOs.

The upper Madison River is perhaps the most famous and highly regarded wild trout stream in the Western US. The river is formed in Yellowstone National Park at the confluence of the Gibbon and Firehole rivers, just outside of West Yellowstone, Montana. As the upper Madison River leaves Yellowstone National Park, it flows into Hebgen Lake and then works its way north through the Hebgen Dam and then Quake Lake. The stretch of river between Quake Lake and Ennis, Montana is known as the “50 Mile Riffle” and is typically the portion of the Madison River that people refer to as the "Upper Madison."
