Lower Madison River Fishing Reports
Updated Mar 28, 24

*Flow Data: Madison River below Ennis Lake near McAllister, MT

The lower is fishing well with the warming water temperatures and happy trout. The weather is less wintery this week and could make for some good dry fly fishing action. Nymphing has been great. Dry fly fishing with Midges has been pretty solid on calm cloudy days and fish have even been rising when the sun is out. Given the current water temps BWO's could be hatching any day now. A BWO comparadun is tough to beat when the hatch first takes flight. Nymphing with Scuds, sowbugs, worms, and midges has been the most consistent way to catch fish. These flies tend to work very well even through Spring. Deep slow moving water fished with streamers or crayfish patterns can also trick some of the more opportunistic and hungry trout. Sparkle Minnows, wooly buggers, mini Zirdles, and Bow River buggers are all great options. For the most part, fish are sitting at the bottom of deep slow moving water. Target the areas where the water is walking speed or slower for the best success.

If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
