Lower Madison River Fishing Reports
Updated Apr 18, 24

*Flow Data: Madison River below Ennis Lake near McAllister, MT

The lower is fishing well and this cool wet weather could make for some excellent dry fly fishing. Nymphing has been great. Dry fly fishing with Midges, and BWO's has been good and should remain strong for a while longer. A BWO comparadun is tough to beat on the Lower. A few Skwalas have been spotted so it never hurts testing the waters with a big foamy stonefly dry. Nymphing with Scuds, sowbugs, worms, and midges has been the most consistent way to catch fish. These flies tend to work very well into runoff. Deep slow moving water fished with streamers or crayfish patterns can also trick some of the more opportunistic and hungry trout. Fish are starting to move into quicker water so if the low and slow is not producing, try a different water type. Sparkle Minnows, wooly buggers, mini Zirdles, and Bow River buggers are all great options. For the most part, fish are sitting at the bottom of deep slow moving water. Target the areas where the water is walking speed or slower for the best success. Keep an eye out for, and try to avoid spawning trout and their redds.
