Upper Madison Fishing Report 7/23/2018

Jul, 23 2018

It's a bug factory out there. Caddis, mayflies and stoneflies are all making appearances. If you're looking for numbers, nymph a lightning bug, serendipity or other small attractor pattern. Multiple hatches are occuring at once, so try a few different flies until you f what the fish are keying on. This could change rapidly throughout the day. There have been multiple species of caddis, smaller-sized mayfly hatches and spinner falls, large drakes and Yellow Sallies. Try a foam attractor pattern or stimulator followed by an imitation of the predominant hatch to start. Sometimes they're going after the big stuff. Hoppers are starting to make some noise along the riverbanks, so a large terrestrial pattern is worth a shot in the afternoon. The evenings continue to produce great hatches of the size 16 tan caddis and the smaller black ones as well.
