Upper Madison Fishing Report 10/9/2018

Oct, 09 2018

The upper Madison is still fishing well. Small attractor mayflies have been good as BWOs are coming off in larger numbers. To match these bugs more specifically we have had luck using something of the crippled variety, like a BWO Sprout or BWO Comparadun. Cluster midges and griffiths gnats have worked when you see fish up but cannot tell what they are eating. BWO nymphs and emergers are quite effective along with midge pupa or caddis nymphs. Any time we see some precipitation it could move some worms into the river so expect a San Juan Worm to produce. Streamer fishing has still been hit or miss but your best bet is olive or white flashy and articulated with a thin profile but more and more folks are saying they are having good luck on streamers. For nymphing, a Pat's Rubberlegs followed by a small, size 16 or 18 mayfly imitation has been doing well and expect the midge action to be good as well.
