Missouri River Fly Fishing Update and Caddis Fest 2017

May, 17 2017

Just another spring day here in Montana, as far as I can tell. I spent the night listening to the sound of rain on the camper shell, interrupted every fifteen minutes or so by the heater turning on and off, trying to keep the temperature in the low 60’s.  However, the wind seems to be down, the birds are singing, and the sky is dark for a change. Should be in for another solid day of fishing on the Missouri.

Recent flows out of Holter Dam have significantly increased over the last few days, making wade fishing a thing of the recent past. As flows approach 10’000 cfs in the coming days, expect the holding water to become harder to find for sure. Nymphing with Scud and Sowbug combinations continues to be my best rig throughout the day.

As the flows increase, many of the mid-river fish move in closer to structure and closer to the banks. So, I have simply started fishing closer to structure and closer to the banks, rather than lengthening my rigs and fishing the same water as I was just a few days ago. However, that will work just fine too, but dealing with 10’ nymph rigs isn’t always the best way to spend the day on the water.

The Craig Caddis Fest is this weekend here on the Missouri River if you plan on being in the area this Saturday. It’s just a great excuse to spend the day in Craig and there will be lots of food, entertainment, and various representatives from the fly-fishing industry. Probably not much in the way of Caddis Dry fly fishing this weekend, but stranger things have been known to happen!
